Rise of TMC in Bengal

Trinamool Congress, the current ruling party of West Bengal with supremo leader Mamata Banerjee at its head almost always seems to be in the news but  it seems to be more than often  for the wrong reasons. Whether its badmouthing the prime minister or being part of various scams which loosens the credibility of the state government amongst the locals but its almost astonishing how they keep winning from 2011 till now.

To understand how this all started and how a mostly local political party has nowadays became the third largest in the Lok Sabha. From the seats of bitter opposition to the reigning champions. Today’s article let’s unfold the behind the scene story of the rise of TMC in Bengal.

To understand the rise of the said party, one needs to understand the ideology and the basics, on top of which this party stands and its all in all and Mamata Banerjee is a huge part of the aforementioned basics.

To state this statement with more clarity, Mamata is Trinamool and vice versa. That’s why to understand the rise of it , we have to know how Mamata became what she is, today.

Starting of off as an ambitious Congress youth worker , her rise to fame was the now infamous dance on the bonnet of legendary political Sri Jayaprakash Narayan in the year 1977 as a bizzare form of protest. In the year 1997, she cut off of her links from Congress because they didn’t agree with her viewpoint of working with BJP. Now the irony is that nowadays that very same Mamata is the paragon of secularism .For 34 years left front government had ruled Bengal and did everything in their power to demolish the state’s prosperity, in terms of business revenue. Businesses started to fade out of Bengal in the fear of dealing with infamous trade unions of left and unlimited amount of strikes

what happened with mamat and why she left Congress party ?

But one communist leader wanted to make a difference, who’s none other than Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, a dhoti clad sophisticated gentleman who’s more  famous in the region for being the nephew of poet Sukanta Bhattacharya than anything else.

Unlike his predecessors Buddhababu was keen to make a difference and to prove his convictions and commitment he left no stones unturned. He left his comfort zone and went to Singapore and Indonesia in a bid to woo Foreign Direct Investment or FDI.

And as a steadfast man like him should do, he had done his preparations thoroughly before his arrival in Singapore and gave a presentation about Bengal’s efficiency. He had shown Mr. Anthony Salim, the chairman of the Salim group, the map of the proposed industrial economic zone which encompassed four places from South 24 pgs. They were Baruipur, Sonarpur, Canning and Magrahat. But they took interest in Nandigram instead.

Not only that, Bengal was going to get a brand new tata nano factory in Singur, as per the declaration of Ratan Tata in 2006. TMC lead by Mamata vehemently protested the decision of making the factory there. They agitated the farmers and provoked them. The carelessness of the Left front government while undertaking the project without consulting the farmers backfired on them.and TMC seized the opportunity.

At May 25th the farmers decided to stage protest and opputunist TMC decided to use this protest movement at their own flavor and  in July,18th 2006, Mamta herself planted paddy there as a symbol to oppose the project. And soon after that she had resorted to hunger strike and only after the appeal of both the then President and prime minister, she stopped. Talk with the government, governer and everything else had failed. Or rather TMC didn’t want it to be successful.

The Government even agreed to pay those farmers who hadn’t get any compensations. But thanks to TMC’s provoking the farmers weren’t ready to listen to anyone.

But to be honest TMC was only hankering for power and nothing else and once again, the left has handed to them in a platter .

When Salim decided to takeover 10,000 acres of lands of farmers as its a standard requirement of a SEZ. The farmers provoked and brainwashed by maoisits had opened a front called Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh committee and started to protest. The entire Nandigram area was under the control of BUPC and Mamata’s Trinamool was an invested party in this particular protest. She even started campaigning the cause of the protest by calling it a protest of Maa, Maati , Manush.

The Government has enough and decided to do something about it. And allegedly issued an order an operation to free Nandigram from the clutches of BUPC with overwhelming them with 3000 policemen there on 14th March, 2007. Somehow this news was leaked to the BUPC, who had gathered 5000 villagers to counter the action and officially 14 and unofficially more than 100 died in the resulting clash.

Mamata took advantage of this situation. As she set herself in  forefront of this protest  she got sympathy from the masses who are this point started to detest the left front government. Actually they were kinda jaded at this point due to constant politics first and development later scenario for nearly three decades but they can’t vote another because there were no opposition to the left in Bengal for a long time.

Now that the TMC seemed to gain credibility and was establishing themselves as the champion of the common people. Masses in Bengal had put their hope in there. They (èf slogan which earned her the most coveted CM’s chamber, which was ‘ badla noi badal chai”.

Not only common folks but celebrities like Saonli Mitra, Bibhas Chakraborty and painter Subhaprasanna and award winning writers like Smt. Mahasweta Devi also started supporting TMC. Aparna Sen and Kaushik Sen also supported them. Not only that in the 2011 election. Some celebrities like the kind of Tapas Paul had joined the bandwagon.

TMC is in bangal :-

To be honest both of these protests worked like magic for her and TMC and helped them to win the election but there was a third factor which often gets unnoticed. Which was supporting Rizwanur Rahman’s family. Which garnered TMC the sympathies votes of the minorities.

Rahman , a Muslim youth who  fell in love and married Priyanka Todi , the daughter of the Lux Cozi owner. Allegedly her parents forced him into suicide in the 2007. While the government dismissed the suicide as it is.. TMC championed the cause of Rizwanur Rahman’s families’ allegation of murdering their son. They even provided election ticket to his family members.

All of these factors were the main causes  of the rise of TMC in Bengal.
